Social networks of highly skilled third country nationals in Prague
Peloušek, Filip ; Jelínková, Marie (advisor) ; Plaček, Michal (referee)
The diploma thesis is devoted to the social group of highly qualified migrants from third countries living and working in Prague. It deals with what social ties played a role in their migration process, what relationships they established after their arrival in the Czech Republic, and how these contacts helped them face possible problems associated with their relocation. To understand the structure of these social ties, the work uses theory of migration networks, which helps explain how different social ties help reduce the risks and costs associated with migration and how possible migration flows are maintained over time. This theory is complemented by the theory of social ties related to migration according to the work of Granovetter (1973), who is distinguishing between strong and weak social ties of migrating individuals. As part of the practical part of the research, 8 interviews were conducted with highly qualified foreigners in Prague, which were subsequently subjected to a thematic analysis. The research pointed out that migration networks occupy important positions in the lives of groups of highly qualified migrants living in Prague, when these networks significantly facilitate the process of migration itself and help them either completely eliminate or better solve problems arising from...

Sedláková, Klára ; Čada, Karel (advisor) ; Šanderová, Jadwiga (referee)
This master thesis deals with the topic of migration of the fresh graduates from Czech Republic to Germany. The reasons for migration are introduced with the theoretical help of the Push and pull factors theory. The understanding of the strategy of decision to migrate as a natural process is related to the theory of Exit, voice and loyalty of Albert Hirschman. The research is based on a series of semi-structured interviews with participants who intend to migrate after the graduation. Since this thesis is focused on the perspective of the main actors of the phenomenon, the migrants, it introduces the diversity of their attitudes to the reasons for migration. The main finding is the importance of the role of respect in the particular everyday situations, which is reflected in the several of ascertained types of motivating factors to migrate. Why don’t migrants with secondary education return?
Ivanova, Renata ; Jeong, Byeongju
The paper attempts to explain a U-shaped pattern of return migration rates with respect to educational attainment. We develop a two period OLG model with emigration and return migration decisions undertaken by agents heterogeneous in terms of educational attainment. The immigration policy is considered as an additional determinant for the migration decision. The model predicts that the combination of two forces - relative returns to schooling and uncertain opportunities for status adjustment - results in favorable conditions for migrants with secondary education to remain abroad permanently.
